Truth or Consequences with Tom Clark Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 February 2008

Tues. Feb. 19

Well, here's a provocative topic: "What's So Great About Truth?" We remember Judas from "Jesus Christ Superstar" asking Jesus, "What is truth? Are mine the same as yours? We all have truths ... " Here's how McIntyre & Moore, your friendly Somerville indy booksellers, are pitching the February "Philosophy Cafe" moderated by Tom Clark. It's full title is "Positive Illusions: What's So Great About Truth?," and it will focus on the following: "Socrates said that the unexamined life isn't worth living. But what if discovering the truth about ourselves didn't set us free, but merely depressed us? Are we sometimes better off believing falsehoods, or should commitment to truth always come first? Is it possible to knowingly deceive ourselves, and if so, should we? If discovering the truth about ourselves didn't set us but merely depressed us? Are we sometimes better off believing falsehoods, or should commitment to truth always come first? Is it possible to knowingly deceive ourselves, and if so, should we?" This intellectual tussle, this chinwag for the brain, runs from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
