Jeremy Lyons: From New Orleans to Brookline Print E-mail
Saturday, 26 January 2008

Sat. Jan. 26

It'd be damned foolish to talk about good things that came out of Hurricane Katrina. So we won't. But we will say that one singer-guitarist named Jeremy Lyons fled the flooded city and came to our parts, now calling Cambridge home. What they said about him back there: "Jeremy Lyons has invoked the spirit of Robert Johnson and his contemporaries. The fluid finger picking and searing slides set the swinging rhythm ablaze. The resulting sound is thick with tradition, yet somehow refreshing and unconventional." (That was from Where Y'at Magazine.) Lyons and his band have a new CD out, "Death of a Street Singer," and are celebrating with a gig at Matt Murphy's Saturday Jan. 26 at 10 p.m. It's a freebie. With him are Jerome Dupree (the original Morphine drummer) and "Washtub" Robbie Phillips Robbie Phillips, who played bass with the legendary Howard Armstrong during the last years of his life. He plays the "diddley bow" (a two string bass instrument of his own invention) with Jeremy. What to expect: cool, blues and R&B based music that Lyons calls "deltabilly" You can hit the website at www.deltabilly.com
