Sat. Feb. 16 Feeling like doing something with a little upscale class to celebrate Valentine's D ay this year? The Boston Symphony Orchestra may have what you're looking for. British conductor Mark Elder (in photo) conducts the BSO in Sibelius’Violin Concerto featuring a solo performance by renowned Russian violinist Vadim Repin. The program, which includes the rarely heard Shostakovich Symphony No. 4, will be performed at Symphony Hall and at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 16. Sibelius’ deep knowledge of and love for Finnish folk music, as well as his love for his own instrument, the violin, is evident in his uniquely beautiful Violin Concerto. Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 4, long overshadowed by his Fifth Symphony and heard only once before at the BSO in spring 1978 under the direction of Mstislav Rostropovich, will be given a rare performance. Elder is currently music director of The Hallé, Britain’s longest-established symphony orchestra. Tickets: $103-$29. 301 Massachusetts Ave., 617-266-1200 www.bso.org
