Thurs. Jan 24 Asa Brebner - you might know him as the former guitarist for Robin Lane & the Chartbusters or a solo artist of considerable wit and esteem - but he also plays guitar in a doo-wop band, the Family Jewels. This is something he realizes may need some explanation - as people don't usually make the transition from pop-rock - sometimes wiseacre pop-rock, sometimes full of wisdom - to this area. So we asked. "I don't usually like 'archivist' type bands," he says, "But the Jewels mine all kinds of esoteric doo-wop, gospel and R & B. I like to think of Van Halen, Bob Marley and The Beatles as transending the genre that they are in by bringing something undefineable that makes them special I think the undefinable thing about the Jewels that makes punks, old people, children, unrelated music appreciators all dig them is that the back up vocals make it one. It's universal. You have to check it out to catch the appeal... This Thursday the 24th the Family Jewels will be playing a new venue for us, The Beehive in Boston's South End near the intersection of East Berkley street. I assume we will go on around 9:30 and play till closing-- This is supposed to be the most happening nightspot in the local area and is booked by none other than space age bachelor pad spinning D-jay Brother Cleve."
To his fan base, Brebner shoots out this message: "I know this gig is at NIGHT!! (Oh my god) so many of you who are used to seeing us at the Plough & Stars on Saturday afternoons will be daunted. I'm sure we will win over a lot of new fans, night vipers, vampires and jaded hipsters but we want YOU!, our original fans, to come out and support us. This place is for the super groovy people and you too may count yourselves amongst the god kissed cogniscentia of hipness if you can rise to the occasion and past this arduous test! Please don't pester the (club) by asking any questions that might embarrass me such as 'Do you have a dress code?' (Yes. only super cool outfits can pass muster by discerning bouncers at the door - for any further advice on the matter, please consult French Vogue) or 'Is there a Chuck E. Cheese nearby?' (Answer: No.) I know it's a late show! You may have to crawl in to work bleary- eyed the next morning. Even though Fred, our lead singer is black, we remain on the borderline of being totally cool! (I don't know why he just doesn't fire us greyboys and get hisself a real doo-wop band.) This could be our big moment!!!" 541 Tremont St, 617-423-0069 www.beehiveboston.com |
