Professor Gibby Haynes presents ... Print E-mail
Thursday, 14 February 2008

Fri. Feb. 15

We've watched Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfers as he poured alcohol on his drummer's cymbal, lit it, and watched while the flames singed the ceiling of a now-defunct Boston club. We've watched him and the Buttholes screen penis surgery films behind them as they played. We've watched them play a set while a nude woman danced on stage throughout, oblivious to everything. We've sat in a dressing room with them while a joint was being passed around. We passed on the joint. Good call. One who didn't later reported really hellish side effects, as if it might have been laced with PCP or something. And we've heard some of the nastiest, wittiest, more corrosive psychedelic American rock produced over the past couple of decades from Gibby and the Buttholes. Now comes this: Haynes - sober for some time now -  joins up with teenagers from the Paul Green School of Rock, called the School of Rock All-Stars for a show tonight Friday Feb. 15 at the Middle East  Downstairs. (Green's school served as the inspiration of the Jack Black movie, "School of Rock" we think even though Viacom, who put out the movie doesn't think so. Paul Green thought so, too, but decided not to fight with Viacom's powerful lawyers and just embrace the ensuing publicity. Good call.

Anyway, what's happening here  is part of the school's "Guest Professor Series" which enables the school’s most promising young musicians to perform with established rockers. (Previous guest professors have included Peter Frampton, Eddie Vedder, John Wetton, Alice Cooper, Ike Willis, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Adrian Belew, Perry Farrell and Jon Anderson.) So what are the teens' task on this six-city tour which starts tonight? To recreate the Butthole Surfers show experience - as the press release says. (Let's hope it's not all of the experience. Really.) But they'll be playing songs like  "Graveyard," "I Saw an X-Ray of a Girl Passing Gas" and "The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey’s Grave." Also from the press release: Haynes will be working with the teens to recreate the kind of world-class stage and light shows that the Butthole Surfers were famous for. But, we're told, nothing dangerous or naked. So, we'll tell you've had our mind scrambled in a post enjoyable way at various Butthole and Haynes shows, but we'll warn you the last show we saw from Haynes at T.T. the Bear's was so loud it drove us out on the street after an hour. Hopefully, things will be in a little more control at the Middle East. At any rate, bring earplugs. And, let's face it, it's kind of a perverse kick to think of Prof. Haynes mentoring teens in his subversive stuff. This may just be a real hoot or a mess or a mess of bliss. Starts at 9 with Children of the Unicorn. Tickets: $12.
