Sun. Feb. 24 Last call! What you'll see: A landscape of steel with ladders to nowhere and sixteen foot see-saws. What you'll hear: A soundscape of steel cellos and rock music. Who y ou'll encounter on stage: A corrupt host who emerges from a house of steel and three relentless contestants dancing for an illusive prize of love, of life, of survival, where it's less about winning and more about losing the least. Is this reality TV gone mad, or gone Mad Max, and it comes to the stage Sunday Feb. 24. It's at the Cutler Majestic Theatre. The Attack Theatre company is calling this dance/rock opera "Games of Steel." (No relation to the Rolling Stones "Wheels of Steel" tour, we imagine.) It comes to Boston after a seven-city national tour having received the prestigious National Dance Project touring Originally produced in a former rubber band factory, for the Boston engagement Attack Theatre co-directors Peter Kope (who also plays the "evil host") and Michele de la Reza (who plays the "blue contestant") have remixed and revamped the show since its 2005 debut with many new songs, new choreography and introduces the newest Attack Theatre dancer Angela Essler. The dancers - de la Reza, Kope, Essler, and original cast member Jeff Davis - are joined onstage by four rocking musicians: Attack Theatre Music Director Dave Eggar (cello, keyboard, vocals), Dina Fanai (vocals), Tom Pirozzi (electric bass) and Matt Zebroski (percussion). Steel sculptures by Red Star Ironworks complete the set. 219 Tremont Street, 800-233-3123 or www.maj.org.
Says Kope: "It's been remarkable to experience the changes in this production...it's wonderful to be able to grow both as an artist and a company in this work. Based on the success from our tour, we know this piece resonates with young, old, dance aficionados and rock music enthusiasts." Adds de la Reza:Now that the show is built for a proscenium and not a warehouse, the story is clearer, the music and dance stronger, but will the audience still feel our sweat? In Ohio we had a line of audience members after the show wanting to play on the see-saw that spins at break-neck speed...I guess they do still feel the danger, the passion, the intensity across the proscenium arch." Attack Theatre is currently Dance Company in Residence at Carnegie Mellon University School of Music in Pittsburgh. It was recently featured in Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch for 2007”, won “Best Dance Company of 2007” by the Pittsburgh City Paper, “Best Dance of 2006” by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Sunday Feb. 24 show is at 3. Tickets: $45-$12. |
