Enduring Wit: SPAMALOT RETURNS! (Silly still in favor) Print E-mail
Sunday, 27 January 2008

 Sun. Jan. 27

Last call! We're not sure which of the former Monty Python guys came up with the name "SPAMALOT" for the staged version of their TV-and-film lunacy, but it was bloody brilliant. There's the famous Python skit about spam; there's their movies about knights and holy grails, Camalot and the like. You put 'em together and ... presto: SPAMALOT, a Tony-winning musical that is basically the staged version "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," with the book by Eric Idle himself. SPAMALOT - officially it's "Monty Python's SPAMALOT," tells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows, killer rabbits and taunting, flatulent Frenchmen and dancing divas are just some of what they encounter. We saw this show when it first came to Boston in March 2006, and as committed Python-fans were more or less pre-sold on the concept. But sometimes the absurdity of tv and film doesn't translate to the theater of the absurd, and it did here. We could quibble that Python's best-known song (from "Life of Brian") is "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" and its context was that was the song the crucified victims sang and whistled as their lives wound down on the cross. Not the same here. And, still, you'll find yourself whistling along, enjoying the irony. The showis concludes Sun. Jan. 27, at 2,  at the Opera House. Tickets: $82.50 - $27.50.
