Billy Beard - club booker, manager, member of many a Boston band, including Session Americana - just shot us an email about the "Sub Rosa" program he and his mates are putting on at the Lizard Lounge Saturday Dec. 22. But first of all, he asks: Hey, why Sub Rosa?" And he answers:  "Historically, secret societies have been the subject of suspicion and speculation from non-members since the time of the ancient Greeks, when meetings were held "sub rosa" (Latin, "under the rose"). This phrase arrises from the fact that the rose was the emblem of the god Horus in ancient Egypt. ... In the Middle Ages a rose suspended from the  ceiling of a council chamber pledged all present (those under the rose) to secrecy. Today the phrases "Sub Rosa" and "under the rose" are commonly used to indicate secrecy." And so, the "secret society" playing this gig includes Rose Polenzani, Dennis Brennan, Jennifer Kimball, Members of Session Americana (in photo), David and Katie Champagne, Anne Heaton, Dave Godowsky, and more. It starts at 9:15 and the cover charge is $7.
