Thurs. Dec. 20 You know Dave Tree from his scorching and agitated hard rock with the bands Tree, and, currently SuperPower. What you may not know is that Tree also fronts a J. Geils Band cover outfit, Blow Your Face Out, which plays Thursday Dec. 20 at Great Scott. They're opening at 9, for yet another cool cover band, the Scrooges, who tend to show up around Christmas time and play Stooges covers. Says Tree, of his alter-band: "We channel the spirit of '70s Geils blues blasters. Come witness the magic for your self. (Since) we play with the Scrooges, this will be a rocker so the faint of heartm please leave the building and the block. The Whole Blow Your Face out band came together when I was having a drink at the Model Cafe when Dave Unger commented how in the upcoming month he wanted to book cool cover bands at the Model. Immediately I said 'I want to start a J. Geils cover band' which was overheard by Gary who plays drums. We quickly agreed to pull it together and concentrate on the J. Geils band '70s recordings." (This would be pre superstardom, when the Geils Band was one of the hardest working, funkiest and hardest rocking bands of the era, constantly touring the Northeast.) "One month later we played to a sold out crowd. So we decided what the hell and we did another show during the summer at the Model. In the middle of the set Peter Wolf" - J. Geils former singer - came up and sang "Lookin' for a Love" with us. I was blown away. So was everyone there. It was a sweet piece of Rock History happening before my eyes." Now, as to the Scrooges ... they claim to come from the North Pole (but more likely Allston) and they'll probably all dress like Santa, confusing the little kids already baffled by a myriad of mall Santas. Then, again, this isn't a show little kids will be at, is it? The Scrooges will be playing "No Fun," "Search and Destroy," "TV Eye," "I Got a Right" and many more favorites from the original pre-punk band. Check out their www.myspace.com/thescrooges. Tickets: $7. 1222 Commonwealth Ave., Allston, 617-566-9014 www.greatscottboston.com
