Tuesday Sept. 26 "You're supposed to sit on your ass and nod at stupid things/Man that's hard to do." That's the opening line of a piano ballad Warren Zevon wrote when Bill Lee was at his prime and so was Zevon. (Lee lives in western Mass., pitches a bit, and tells his tales; Zevon died of lung cancer in 2003.) Zevon had heard Lee talk about the gist of what baseball was all about (see: above) and nailed it in song. Lee had a sometimes troubled, sometimes glorious reign in these parts - he hung "The Gerbil" nickname around Don Zimmer's neck, and was a member of the Buffalo Heads - a group of Red Sox conformists who did things (or so it was said) like sprinkle pot on cereal. Anyway, Lee comes to town, to the Downtown Crossing Borders Tuesday Sept. 26 at 12:30 p.m. for a signing of his new DVD, "Spaceman: A Baseball Odyssey.'' The ultimate gift for the Sox fan, now that the team has headed south. He's only signing the DVDs, but we'll bet he'll yak it up for the faithful who never tire of hearing these stories. 10-24 School St., Downtown Crossing, 617-557-7188 www.bordersstores.com
