Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun: Psychedelia from Concord Ballet Orchestra Players Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 December 2007

Thurs. Dec. 27

The Concord Ballet Orchestra Players is a real "rock" band, unlike Showtime's fictional Flight of the Conchords. But like the TV 'chords of a semi-similar name, they don't sound much like their moniker. The Concord Ballet guys  are having a Thursday residency at PA's Lounge in Somerville, (where the photo here was taken last year) with various guests joining up. Here's the Ballet's keyboardist and occasional flutist Jeff Breeze (also host of WMBR's "Pipeline!") on what his group does: "We're an 8-piece impov ensemble. Our stage presence is generally massive since with 2 drum kits, 4 keyboards, 2 computers, a couple guitars, bass, and theremin we have yet to play on a stage where we fit comfortably. We (recently) spilled off both on the front and the side of the stage just trying to get all of our gear in place. Our first performance was centered around a Faust cover and that sort of communal aesthetic has always been present in the sounds we create. The analogy that I came up most recently was that we're like a bunch of masons and we throw out these bricks of sound. The theremin - as played usually by Kris Thompson - serves as a mortar making our music into a brick wall of sound that stands up pretty solidly under even the greatest scrutiny an analysis." On Thursday, Dec. 27, the last gig of the run,  CBOP plays three sets, with A.R. Plovnick, Rob Byrd and Ekranoplan playing shorts sets between them. Starts at 8:30. Tickets: $7 for 21+ and $10 for 18-20-year-olds. (The extra $3 presumably covers the beer they don't drink.)
