More Gore: On Stage, Not Screen, at T.T. the Bear's Print E-mail
Sunday, 02 December 2007

Sun. Dec. 2

Wow. Saturday night in Boston is a huge one, but if you've still got something to spend (money, energy) consider T.T. the Bear's Sunday Dec. 2 and our new fave the Gore Gore Girls. Their name may - in part - be a play of the Gore Girls - the famous beauty-queen daughters of ex-V.P. Oscar winning Nobel guy Al, but it's also something more. (See, the end of the item.) The four ladies are steeped in both the Spector girl group sound and Stooges grunge. They're Detroit gals, after all. They even wrote one song on their debut CD, "Get the Gore," with legendery vampire/impressario Kim Fowley. (Kim was doing this with the Runaways back in the Mesozoic era.) You can think of the GG Girls as cruising on the same kind of plane as the Rev. Horton Heat and the Cramps. They are virtual sisters of the Donnas. They share a player (bassist Carol Anne Schumacher) with the Detroit Cobras. How can you not love rave-ups like "Fox in a Box," "Where Evil Grows," and "You Lied to Me Before." One of our favorite tunes is "All Grown Up," written from the point of view of a 17-year-old here Amy Surdu sings - "I"m all grown up and I'll go where I wanna go/See who I wanna see/Stay up late/All grown up/And I'll do I wanna do/Be who I wanna be/I can hardly wait." In "Pleasure Unit," they're out "stealing shoes and crusing cars." They're faves of Little Steven, who's featured them on his "Underground Garage" radio show and live lineups. They're young, loud and snotty in all the right ways. Bonus: The drummer is named Nikki Sytxx and they took their moniker from a Herschel Gordon Lewis sexplotation/violence fest done back in the early '60s. (See, he took the term "go go girls" and employed it for his own nefarious devices. And so do they.) Beast of England starts things off at 9 followed by TAB. Expect the Girls at 11. Tickets: $10.
