Before Snoop Dogg was Snoop Doggy Dogg, William Wegman knew it was a doggy dog world. Wegmen, a native of Holyoke and graduate of the Mass. College of Art, was initially known for photographing the artist Man Ray. In 1986, he began photographing a female Weimaraner - he called her Fay Ray - and he was off. Wegmen's work has been a part of popular culture (on "Sesame Street," features in Entertainment Weekly and Salon) and his work hangs permanently in at least four museums. Most recently, he was artist-in-residence at Phillips Academy in Andover. Wegmen's work captures our love of canines, and, yet, he puts them into artistic or whimsical settings that make us wonder, sometimes: What does that dog really want? (Likely answer, another bone.) But it's not four dogs playing poker. An exhibition starts Thursday Nov. 29 (and runs through Jan. 13) at the Griffin Museum in Winchester called "It's a Dog's Life: Photographs by William Wegmen." The museum is open 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. most days, noon to 4 on weekends. Admission is $5 and free on Thursdays.
