Hey, Hey, He Was a Monkee ... Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 September 2006

                                                      Tuesday, Sept. 19

I once covered ex-Monkee Peter Tork doing a heavy metal show of Monkeees songs at a now-defunct Boston club called Bunratty's. After, I asked: What it was like going through life always being identified as a former Monkee? "Compared to what?" he answered, which when you think of it, was dead on. He had no other comparative points: This was his norm. But Micky Dolenz - the drummer, singer and sometime writer for the pre-fab four - tacked a lot more onto his resume as the years went by. He acted in Harry Nilsson's "The Point!,", directed and produced TV shows in England and was a DJ in New York.. (He also reuinited for various Monkees-minus-Mike Nesmith tours) Dolenz, 61, is currently acting in a revival of "Pippin'' (playing Charlemagne at the Goodspeed Opera Hourse) in East Haddam, CT. The show closes Sept. 24, but then begins a national tour. Meanwhile, Dolenz has written books including his latest "Gakky Two-Feet." He takes a break from "Pippin" to come to Borders in Peabody Tuesday Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. for a free reading and signing. (The kids book is about the first ape to walk, who naturally catches hell from the four-legged walkers. But then he saves 'em from a hungry lion and ... well, we're not going to spoil it.)
