The Brookline Chorus Gives New Life to "Carmina Burana" Print E-mail
Saturday, 17 November 2007

Sat. Nov. 17

Last spring, we were part of a 700-person audience, watching the Brookline Chorus put on a program called "Musik Macht Frie" (Music Will Set Us Free), singing songs written by composers from the German concentration camps during the second World War. Pretty powerful stuff, whether you understood the words or not. The Brookline Chorus, directed by Lisa Graham (in photo)  has a different sort of program up Saturday Nov. 17 at the All Saints Parish in Brookline. Explains chorus member Harris Allen: "Carl Orff is the composer and the major piece being sung is 'Carmina Burana,' written in 1936. It's a lovely piece, and it'll be sung in the primary language - a mixture of German and Latin. The major theme has to do wth a guy falling in love and it's an amazingly sensual piece. We're going to have four soloists who are outstanding. (There are four other soloists who are being brought in from the larger community, too, and they are terrific.) We have a children's choir singing a couple of pieces with us," Two pianos and percussion are also involved. "The music is stirring," continues Allen. "The melodies and themes have made their way into the popular mainstream. I was at my yoga studio the other day, and there was a new age piece in the background, that had in its essence a theme from 'Carmina Burana.' There are familiar themes people will recognize. If one troubles oneself, to follow the text there are very sensual sections, very poetically put together, very nicely expressed." The full 80-plus Chorus will be involved. The program starts at 8. Tickets; $20.
