Time for a New Universe: Try the Beatles as channeled by Julie Taymor Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 November 2007

Picture yourself on a boat on a river ... Sometimes, you just need to fantasize, escape. The Beatles knew that. So does Julie Taymor. And we recommend "Across the Universe," the phantasmagorical Taymor film that's still up and running. Strangely poignant and comical at the same time, a '60s nostalgia trip with resonance to the Middle East today ... and those Beatles songs seem to find the strangest tie-ins to plot! But, heck, it's a trip, and even the most wrongheaded attempts (Eddie Izzard's "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite," Bono's "I Am the Walrus") have a perverse fascination about them. And, there are a couple of surprises. You know after you hear a girl introduced as Prudence that you'll hear "Dear Prudence." But did you think Lucy might not have a sequence in the sky ('til the credits, perhaps) or that Max might use a hammer, but not bang somebody on the head with a silver one? So, if you want a way out of Red Sox miasma and want it with the songs made famous by the fab four (redone by a quizzical cast) check in with "Across the Universe," and sing along with the chorus: "Nothing's gonna change my world, nothing's gonna change my world ..." It's at the AMC Loews Boston Common 19 at 2:15. Ticket: $9.75.  Again: This is not as bad a movie as you might have been told - despite the stretch of a plot - and there are moments of splendor and brilliance. And you'll naturally be thinking: How would I have visualized that song?
