The Pipettes Have Come for Your Boyfriends ... And Then They Will Dump Them Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 November 2007

Thurs. Nov. 15

"We are the Pipettes/And we've got no regrets/If you haven't noticed yet/We're the prettiest girls you've ever met." Well ... This comes from the first song on the Pipettes debut full-length disc. The Pipettes, a trio of gals from Britain - Riotbecki, Gwenno and Rosay - who have adopted the sweet/lush Phil Spector girl group sound - I can't think of a proper Spector joke now so I won't even try - but given it a slight twist. That is, the girls aren't deferring to boyfriends or dwarf monster producers with guns, but are singing songs where they're on the top. Come to think of it this is what early Blondie was about, too (in part)  but that was just Deborah Harry as the voice and these are all distaff persons. Also: They're more rooted to the '60s girl group sound and Blondie had a bigger world to travel. But, attitude, they got attitude. In  that first song we mentioned, "We Are the Pipettes," the boy gets left in the dust by these pretty girls. In "Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me," they sing, "Can't you see we're through, boy/Get out of my face!" The Pipettes recall a less shambolic Fuzzbox or a tart Shangri-La's. It's all buoyant and bouncy on the surface, and a little nasty underneath. We're guessing the gals probably have a B-52's-esque bounce in concert, too. Note: This was originally slated for the Paradise Oct. 9, but touring problems bounced the show a month, and a club. They're at Great Scott Thursday Nov. 15. Monter Bobby opens and, as this is a Fenway Recordings Session, you can get DJ Carbo will be at the wheels of steel. Starts around 9. Tickets: $15.
