On Good and Evil... The Philosophy Cafe is Open Print E-mail
Tuesday, 16 October 2007

Tues. Oct. 16

"I'm not bad, Mr. Valiant," purred Jessica Rabbit in the 1988 cartoon-live action film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." "I was just drawn that way." That got us to thinking about the nature of good and evil almost two decades ago ... and we still haven't figured it out. Nurture? Nature? Was Ted Bundy born evil? Charles Manson? Did society make them that way? How about the rest of us? Do we know what evil lurks in the heart of men? What are we capable of doing in the name of self-interest? Or, have we developed such a core of morality that evil is both recognizable and repugnant? These are the kind of issues - we gather - that will be discussed Tuesday October 16 at McIntyre & Moore Booksellers, when Tom Clark (in photo) hosts the month "Philosophy Cafe." That's where Moore - director of the Boston-based Center for Naturalism - hosts a discussion group and this month's topic is "The Science of Good and Evil: Are We Explaining Morality Away?" As always, it's free and all points of view are welcome. It runs from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
