George Clinton: The Jesus of Cool at House of Blues Print E-mail
Feb 13, 2013 at 12:00 AM

Wed. Feb. 13

New date because of storm! When the jam band craze hit, I can't say I was enthralled, signifying, it seemed, a throwback to hippie noodling and a step away from the intensity and creativity unleashed by punk and post-punk. But I also used to say - when considering George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars - that they were the only jam band that really mattered. I still think so. Because the ageless Clinton and his guys - 20 or so, most nights - drew from funk, rock and psychedelia and truly accomplished with their music and their audience what they claimed in their slogan: "Free your ass and your mind will follow." A Clinton crowd is a black and white crowd, truly a 50-50 mix of young and not-quite-as-young. The young folks should go to see how a master does it; the older folks will go because they know no one does it better. There's a lot in Clinton's stuff - politics, humor, social commentary, and booty-shaking riffs. Classic songs? "Nubian Nut," "Atomic Dog," "Cosmic Slop," "Maggot Brain," "One Nation Under a Groove," "(Not Just) Knee Deep" and, one of my favorite musical questions of all time, "Do Fries Go With That Shake?" They're at the House of Blues Friday Feb. 13, postponed from snow day Friday Feb. 8. Tickets: $29.50. The doors are at 8. Not sure when they'll go on, but they'll probably play forever, or at least three hours. You will leave exhausted, fully satiated, funked-out.
