september 8 The Angry Samoans – a California punk band of the late-‘70s/early-‘80s – wrote “Lights Out,’’ “Right Side of My Mind, “My Old Man, the Fatso’’ and one that had to do with saving a certain part of an infamous dictators anatomy. (Hint: He caused WWII.) For a while, the Samoans stopped playing that song because the right-wing skinhead kids missed the joke and got all stirred up. Now, on a (very) brief comeback jaunt, the band will play the song … but add a mocking coda to it. The Angry Samoans – named after a pro wrestling duo called the Mad Samoans - started in 1978, broke up in 1984 and have been in and out of the punk game since. The two remaining originals, drummer Bill Vockeroth and singer-guitarist Metal Mike Saunders, have real jobs – the former owns a nursery and grows ground cover and the latter is an accountant. For a two-date tour that brings them to the Middle East Downstairs Friday Sept. 8, they will be joined by guitarists Kevin Joseph and Landon Gale-George plus bassist Rick Dasher (ex-Dickies). Age range: 30-52, leaning toward the latter. It will be the first area gig in about 15 years. Goal? “I want to give ‘em their moneysworth,’’ says Vockeroth. “Play the songs the kids wanna hear from the first two albums. I just want to make them happy and don’t want them throwing stuff.’’ Audience make-up? “Seven to 55, with people bringing their kids, showing their kids what they listened to when they were young and dressed up. The kids are in Goth, the parents in old t-shirts.’’ With Dirty Tactics, Motherboar, Imperial Rattlesnake and Red Invasion. The 18-plus show is $12 and doors are at 8:30 p.m. 472 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, 617-864-3278 |
