The Allman Brothers Band in 2007: Who'da Thunk It? Print E-mail
Wednesday, 08 August 2007

Wed. Aug. 8

As long as there is a Gregg Allman, we're guessing there will be an Allman Brothers Band. Now, Gregg hasn't had his brother guitarist Duane in the group since Duane's motorcycle crash back in the early '70s, but the band soldiered on after that and continues to, somewhat miraculously (Dickey Betts' drinking, comings and goings, Gregg's own substance troubles) through the decades. Even after the Southern rock-blues explosion of the mid-'70s, waned the Allmans persevered. Hardcore fans most certainly point to their early work as their best, including that famous "Live at the Fillmore Album," but they're not just an oldies act frozen in amber. They've always been a most vital live band - a jam band before the word became codified to mean a certain kind of thing. Boston has always been a special town for the Bros - they recorded a live album at the Orpheum - and they're just about always here in the summer. This year, they're at the Bank of American Pavilion Wednesday August 8,  in town, rather than Tweeter Center out of town, so that's good news for us urbanites. Starts at 7:30. Tickets: $60-$35.
