Police On Our Backs Print E-mail
Saturday, 28 July 2007

Sat. July 28 and Sun. July 29

The Police are coming! Like you haven't heard. God, how we hated that band's name back in the new wave era. So generic, so authoritative, so boringly obvious. But band names never really matter after success hits, and the Police became the band Sting (in photo, announcing the reunion tour) led to international fame and fortune before he went back to his jazz roots, discovered tantric sex, and became more of a world citizen than a rock 'n' roll road hog. We can respect that. So, what's this tour all about? Filling the coffers? Re-inventing the past? Kicking the old rock-reggae numbers up in a ballpark. (They're playing Fenway Park while the Sox are on the road Sat. July 28 and Sun. 29, shows at 7 p.m.) We weren't even going to mention the dates, figuring everyone who knew about them had tickets or hated them, but now, as production demands have been met, an extra block of (probably very good) tickets are on sale. It's still rock in a stadium. You may be close to the stage but you'll be staring at the big video screen. You'll measure how they aged against how you aged. You'll think Sting munificent for letting Stewart and Andy make some moolah before real retirement sets in. And, you may curse Sting, for taking songs you know and want to hear re-done in a Dylanesque re-examinating way. Available tickets seem to be in the (non-scalped price) $225 range, plus the mysterious handling charges. Save up for Sting!
