Look up in the sky (or on the stage): It's Radio Birdman! Print E-mail
Saturday, 09 September 2006

september 9

There are times when we can profess to certain prescience or hipness, and times, when we have to sigh and say we missed the boat. The latter is the case when it came to the Stooges/MC5-driven Radio Birdman, a band that was overshadowed by Australian compatriots, the Saints, when the first Aussie wave crashed our shores in the late-'70s. Birdman was led by singer Rob Younger and guitarist Deniz Tek. Of course, it didn't last, but various Birdmen landed in Aussie bands we dug tremendously: the Lime Spiders, Celibate Rifles, Hoodoo Gurus and Screaming Tribesman. The original four guys in Radio Birdman re-formed ten years ago. A new rhythm section took over after 2000, but Birdman is back with Tek and Younger at the helm, supporting a new album, "Zero Beach.'' There's also a collection of their early stuff "The Essential Radio Birdman: 1974-1978'' that's well worth your time. As is their gig at the Middle East Downstairs Sept. 9 with the Rogers Sisters (there are two of 'em in this trio) who will entertain with their garage-y trash rock/psychedelia and the Konks.

Starts at 9 p.m. Tickets: $18
