Have Another Drink with Darkbuster This Weekend at Harpers Ferry Print E-mail
Sunday, 24 February 2008

Sun. Feb. 24

Final night! Lenny Lashley, lead singer of Darkbuster, likes to play around his hometown of Boston, but recognizes the perils, too. “You're kind of the 'town house band,'” he says. “I call it the dangling carrot theory – you can make the money, the temptation is there, but it doesn’t necessarily  translate into something beneficial.” You know, if you can always go see a band, why actually go do it? So, Darkbuster doesn't play out all the time. But when they do, they like to do in a bunch. Hence, their annual "Hometown Throwup" (their affectionate answer to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones "Hometown Throwdown") where Darkbuster and a bunch others hold court for a skeinof shows. It wraps up this tonight, Sunday Feb. 24. Tou don't have to puke - the "throwup" thing is just a joke. We think. They do encourage drinking, though. They do it,  and they think you should. Anyway, their third "Throwup" - the first was at O'Brien's, the second at the Abbey Lounge - is at Harpers Ferry, the largest venue yet. When the ‘busters - a WBCN Rumble winner, then a broken-up band, then re-formed with a reshuffled lineup - got off the road last time, Lashley says, “we had our share of strife, but it didn’t wedge us apart. It made us more cohesive.” They haven't put out an album since 2005's "A Weakness for Spirits," but they're at work - sometimes - in the studio with producer David Minehan. They've recorded seven tracks, but done no vocals, yet. Hey, time is on their side, as Irma Thomas sings. Darkbuster works at their own pace. But they actually have their first European tour (with the headlining US Bombs) slated for March, after the "Throwup." These Boston shows start at 9:30 p.m. with three different openers each night. Tickets: $10. Check the Harpers website below for who's on when. (I wrote a review of the first show for the Boston Phoenix, at www.thephoenix.com.)
