Many a Madonna; none of them Ms. Ciccone Print E-mail
Friday, 20 July 2007

Fri. July 20

Last call for the mother of Christ!

Does Somerville have more Madonnas than any other city its size? It might. Keep in mind, Somerville is the densest packed city in New England (it's four square miles) and it's not without a few Catholics. Some Catholics love displaying their Madonnas - don't even think about the Kaballah-lovin' Madonna, the singer - and photographer Josh Michtom found a lot while walking with his son in a stroller back in 2005. The following year he documented more than 230 of these and put them in a 2007 calendar, Somerville Madonnas 2007 Calendar. (Good title.) "There's something human about having a sacred object in a everyday almost ignored context," he says. Many of those photos are now up on the walls at the Paradise Lounge. It's called "Photographs of Religious Iconography" and what they're doing in a rock joint, we don't know. Shock value? Irony? Makes for interesting viewing though, as you're grabbing a pizza or watching a show. All these Madonnas looking at you. Makes you think you're doing something bad. Maybe you are. Free. Closes tonight, Friday July 20.
