Mr. Bass Man: Avishai Cohen's new Trio Print E-mail
Thursday, 26 April 2007

Thurs. April 26

The Regattabar is pretty jazzed up about the trio playing the room Thursday April 26. The main man is double-bassist Avishai Cohen, who has been called one of the best in the world by Time Out London, praised by Chick Corea (who Cohen played with in his New Trio) as a "genius," and proclaimed by the New Yorker that he is "one of the most gifted bassists of his generation." Bass Player Magazine went further, calling him "one of the most 100 Influential BAss Players of the 20th Century." The hope, of course, is that he didn't say, "Well, that's that, I can just coast through the next century." Just kidding. Cohen's driving forward with a his trio, featuring Israeli pianist Shai Maestro (good name for a musician, aye?). The only Yank in the bunch is drummer Mark Guiliana. Cohen's thing is to pull musical styles from anywhere and play the music with pure joy. Cohen is touring behind hsi first live album, "As Is ... Live at the Blue Note. They play shows at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Tickets: $20.
