Some Enchanted Evening with Rasputina Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 August 2008

Wed. Aug. 20

The first time we saw Rasputina, they were in a small, dusky, brick-walled  little room in Austin, Texas during a South by Southwest concert. We were fully enchanted by their strRasputinainged approach to chamber rock - and their odd, enchanting look (corsets, Victorian era garb). Formed by cellist Melora Creager (in photo) back in 1981, Rasputina has gone through numerous changes over the years. We remember them adding a wonderful dimension to a Nirvana concert years ago. And when they covered Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" on disc, it was one of those tracks you just keep repeating. Haunting, mesmerizing, faithfull to the original, but reconfigured, too. Goth fans love 'em, Victorian fans love 'em, alt-rock fans love 'em. Rasputina still remains a radical concept, after all these years. Second chair cellist Sarah Bowman has returned for this spring tour and drummer Jonathan TeBeest rounds out the current lineup. They play the Paradise Wednesday Aug. 20 with Haale opening. Starts at 9, tix $15.
