Augustin Hadelich Virtuoso Violinist ... burn survivor Print E-mail
Saturday, 14 April 2007

Sat. April 14

There is no upside to being a burn victim. We've suffered minor burns and found them excruciating. We lost a friend to a house fire back in the '80s. Augustin Hadelich, a gold medal violinist, suffered severe burns after a 1999 accident at his family's farm in Italy. So,while he's in Boston he will meet and play for patients at the Shriners Burn Hospital. That's cool. He'll also play with the Longwood Symphony Orchestra Saturday April 14 at Jordan Hall. How good is the 22-year-old Hadelich? He won the gold medal in the seventh quadrennial Indianapolis competition last year, beating more than 50 others. For that, he picked up $30,000, a 24-carat Gold Medal and a four-year loan of a Stradivari violin made in 1683, and lots more. LSO music director Jonathan McPhee, who's worked with him twice, calls him "a stunning combination of talent and stage presence like none I've ever seen." At Jordan Hall, he will play Alexander Glazunov's "Violin Concerto in A minor," performed without pauses between movements. Also on the roster: "Mozart's "Symphony No. 35 and Norman Dello Joio's "Seraphic Dialogue (The Triumph of Saint Joan.) The concert, in part a Shriners benefit, starts at 8 p.m. McPhee will speak about it at 6:45 p.m. Tickets: $28.
