Jazz inspired by a child - not for children Print E-mail
Thursday, 29 March 2007

Thurs. March 29

Little Max Spargo is not yet two, and he has an album made in his honor. Ok, that album, "Playroom!" was made by his dad/jazz musician Ed Spargo and if that's your job, that's what you get to do. Bassist Spargo - a longtime Boston sideman to James Montgomery, Peter Wolf, Johnny A. Toni Lynn Washington and the Heavy Metal Horns, among others - steps out on his third solo outing to provide a tasty mix of jazz, Latin and funk instrumentals. In notes to the press, he explains "A lot of the titles were inspired by his toys and his new toy box." This does not make it a kids record, and, frankly, won't make you think of tykes when you hear it. It is a playful, consonant, uptempo record. Spargo celebrates the release with three Massachusetts gigs, the closest to Boston being in Cambrdige at Ryle's Jazz Club Thursday March 29. (That's being billed as the CD release party.) He'll be joined by drummer Brendan Byrnes, pianist Steve Hunt, saxophonist Dino Govoni and percussionist John LaAMoia. Tickets are $10 and the show starts at 9 p.m.
