Fri. Nov. 9

We've tipped the Chandler Travis Philharmonic in this space before and we'll do it again. However, instead of us pontificating upon their spirited omnipop and good humor, we thought we'd just hand the reins over Travis himself and let him tell you what's in store when the Philharmonic play the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain Friday Nov. 9. Says Chandler: "Well, Jim, as you know, we mostly play the sexy sexy music, as featured on my last hit album, "Sexual Bedfellow." (By the way, we're currently working on the follow-up album, "My Mom's Thong".) We will be playing in that very sensual, erotic style we always do, lots of songs about pixies and  butterflies and stuff, but with a very heavy crushing rock stifling awfulness, plus occasional moments of wist. We're not giving anything away free this time; actually, we're trying to get stuff back that we gave away the last couple times (we feel used, discarded; like you guys really took advantage of us.) It's gonna be way fun! If everyone brings enough aluminum foil, we're going to build our drummer a little house!)" Some of this is maybe true, maybe not. We can say the Philharmonic, which Travis in PJs, is a load of fun, with genres criss-crossed (Dixieland, avant-jazz etc.) and scrambled and humor never too far from the core. On around 9 p.m. Cover: $7. The Philharmonic will be playing all night - two long sets, or three slightly shorter sets. These guys are not spring chickens, but they do not lack for energy.
