Berklee kids rock out! Cheap! Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 February 2007

Wed. Feb. 7

There's a few reasons to park yourself  at Berklee Performance Center Wednesday Feb. 7 at 8:15 p.m. 1) You pay only $5 to get in and if you're one of the first 400 to show up you get a free 1GB flash drive courtesy of sponsor SanDisk Inc. 2) Everyone gets a free copy of the CD "Dorm Sessions Volume 4." 3) You'll hear a bunch of Berklee-based bands play that are on the CD. That would include the ska-punk band Big D and the Kids Table (in photo), The Teenage Symphonies (who took their name from Brian Wilson's description of the Beach Boys music), September Twilight, Thick as Thieves and more. The Berklee label, Heavy Rotation, received over 300 submissions for this disc, the label's ninth. (The label's staff are all Berklee kids studying the non-music side of music, that is the biz - marketing, promotion, design etc.) The 7th annual event is emceed by Steve Foxx the Beatboxx. Of the compilation and show, faculty advisor Jeff Dorenfeld says, "The project takes a direction of its own based on the submissions. The tracks that stand out are the ones we go with. Last year, it was more hip-hop oriented; this time, it turned out to be more rock, which we haven't had as much of in the past." Hey, wait, didn't Berklee used to be a jazz school?! Yes, but it's long been more than that, bowing to founder Lee Berk's idea to learn how to play the popular music of the day.
