The American song catalog all punked up by the Gimmes Print E-mail
Tuesday, 28 November 2006

Tues. Nov. 28

Is nothing sacred? I remember the National Lampoon using that on the cover years ago when it spoofed religion, and I can't think it's anything but the motto for Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Singer Spike Slawson formed the Gimmes back in 1995 and drew in members of the Foo Fighters, NOFX and Lagwagon to conspire on a vision of reworking classic American pop (broad usage) songs in the punk format. (True, the Dickies did this with Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" decades ago, but these guys have spent more than a decade pursuing this muse.) Their latest effort, "Love Their Country," tackles country music with rips on "Jolene," "Desperado" and "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky." In the past, they've done Elton John, Barry Manilow, Simon & Garfunkel, Jewish songs, girl groups, the Beach Boys - you name it. It's fun, fun, fun on this quintet's mind and even if they're a one-trick pony, you've gotta love the trick: Familiar melodies - sappy or non - done up punk style for your pleasure. And, you can't beat the band's name. They're at Axis Tuesday Nov. 28. Dead to Me gets things going at 8. All ages. Tickets: $15.
