The Russians Are Coming! Print E-mail
Monday, 27 November 2006

Mon., Nov. 27

How deep does the Gang of Four's influence reach in their hometown of Leeds, England? Can't answer that exactly, but it certainly touched siblings Katie Nicholls (drums) and Whiskas (guitar) and Tom Woodhead (vocals, synths) and Rob Canning (bass). Collectively, they are iForward Russia! and they have that choppy, angular guitar style and whooping shout-sing vocal pattern down pat. (More current reference point: Bloc Party.) Now, get this: They've released their debut album, which has a name, "give me a wall."  But all 11 tracks have not titles, but written numbers. That is the first rack is "thirteen", the fourth is "nine" and, for some reason, the eleventh track is "eleven." Cheeky bastards. This is pretty frenetic stuff and the band's got a rep for stirring it up in concert. They make their area debut at Great Scott Monday Nov. 27, the 30th Fenway Recordings Sessions gigs put on by Mark Kates (DJ Carbo) and company. Bad news: Snowden just dropped off the bill. Good news: Fenway stalwarts Read Yellow stepped in to open. Starts at 9 p.m. Ticket: $10.
