Art Attack! Dave Tree, Kurt Vonnegut (!), others on display at SweeTree PDF Print E-mail
Oct 22, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Sat. Oct. 22

Halloween approaches and local artist/musician Dave Tree's got a Halloween Art Show up at his SweeTree Ink Gallery, which he describes "as a gallery created by an artist for artists and the celebration of art. Providing an important function of bringing new artworks and artists to the attention of the eyes, hearts and minds of society at whole. ThAsa Brebnere most cutting edge gallery in Boston."
Tree - who made his name with lefty band Tree - plays in the Geils tribute band Blow Your Face Out and the hard metal band Superpower. But he's been an artist as long as he's been a musician and here he's got his own work as well as by Joey Mars, Matt Media, Asa Brebner (his guitar art is in photo), Chris McCardle, Ra Miro, Hocus, Wayne Veins, Derick Insult and Kurt Vonnegut. Wait?!
"Yes, Kurt Vonnegut," says Tree, "author of 'Slaughterhouse Five' and 'Breakfast of Champions' among many other literary releases, was also very fond of drawing. He collaborated with a silk screen artist and created prints from his sketches and doodlings. The work is for viewing only and not for sale and will be only shown on the opening night. These prints have never been shown and its a great honor to show them first at SweeTree Ink Gallery."
Tree gives credit to fellow artist Derick Insult and Joe Petrol 3d. "Derek did a silk screen job with Joe, who was friends with Vonnegut and worked with him to create the prints. Joe is also pals with Jimmy Carter, Ralph Steadman and Hunter S Thompson. Now Derick and Joe are good friends now through working together on silk screening, and me and Derick have been friends throught the music 'zine scene in the early 1990s, and there you have the connection."
As to the Boston artists ... Tree: "Joey Mars who works in paint to create cartoony images on acid. His works have been used in print to promote rock n roll forever and in P-town his works cover everything. Asa Brebner, who makes 3 dimensional hanging sculptures that incite you and have you questioning your own sanity at the same time, more hallucinations to follow. Wayne works in found objects to create Gothic doll like sculptures, dark and spooky, it just might turn you on, welcome to the dungeon. Chris McCardle paints and collages images that change as you go in for a closer look, portraits dissolve in a flurry of color and wax, must be seen with the naked eye.
Matt Media paints out of a spray can with can control to a point, works on canvas and found objects, the creator of new species, must be witnessed to be believed. Hocus  sprays paint out of a can will be showing two brand new never seen before skate decks for your viewing pleasure. Ra Miro, an artist from Northampton, works with paints and inks on paper, and uses the hand to make all sorts of creature exist, like Ralph Steadman for our zombie generation. Derick Insult is a master silk screen printer, singer in the hardcore metal band Insult, and all around nice guy will be showing some of new works for the first time ever and is reponsible for bringing the Kurt Vonnegut prints to show the people."
And Dave? He calls himself "a politically activated servant of nature, not afraid to hurt some feelings on the quest for truth and justice, who works in mostly your trash and the waste of our culture, rocks hope to those who suffer in despair."
"No other gallery in town can even come close, we give you the art before anyone else can, to lead one must risk everything, all other galleries in Boston are so safe it's too safe it's soft. It is Puritan and boring. SweeTree Ink Gallery gives you a taste of the future, raw and delicious,  dirty and real the way it's supposed to be, we bring you art from the people to the people, and the people and the art are good.
The gallery is open Saturday 7-11 p.m. and it's free.
