Moira Smiley & VOCO: Four Voices in Harmony, Taking You to Appalachia and Eastern Europe at Passim Print E-mail
Aug 08, 2010 at 12:00 AM

Sun. Aug. 8

We do like genre mash-ups and by that we don't just necessarily mean some clever club DJ making opposites attact. Moria Smiley & VOCO, which plays CMoira Smileylub Passim Sunday Aug. 8, do this kind of thing mixing originals and old-timey songs, steeped in Appalachia, Celtic and Eastern Europe. It's four gals: Smiley who composes the songs sings, plays banjo and accordion as well as body percussion, with Pilar Diaz on vocals and uke and yes BP (body percussion, not British Petroleum), Ariella Forstein on vocals and percussion and April Guthrie on vocals, cello and bp. Some songs are a capella; some are fleshed out with instruments. There's an enticing mix of the exotic and the rarely heard, with a strong sense of roots music. Smiley calls what they do "unique vocal music ... a blend of very emotional, physical use of the voice and harmony. It's the specificity and emotion of the four voices together that sets VOCO apart from other groups." It's an early show, at 4:30 and tickets are $15. (Nighttime show: The always engaging, longtime Passim favorite, Chris Smither.)
