Don't Ask for Whom the Gong Tolls, It Tolls for Thee ... At T.T.s PDF Print E-mail
Mar 28, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Mondays

Remember "The Gong Show?" That Chuck Barris monstrosity that showcased untalented people trying get famous on TV by doing embarrassing crap that we sometimes watched, revolted by the acts and that fact that we were watching ... Oh, wait, that's TV today, too. Yes, folks, "The Gong Show" was just ahead of its time. Maybe it was avant-garde performance art and we didn't even know it. Well, TT the Bear's is taking what traditionally is a slow night in clubland - Monday - and turning it into "Gong Show Karaoke."
"TGong show revived at TT the Bear'she concept is simple," explains club manager Kevin Patey. "A panel of judges, (comprised of members of Boston's music community)  and an opportunity to sing, and risk the chance of the wrath of the judges and the much feared 'gong.'

Why compete? Patey: "Contestants can win prizes and accolade from the judges, (or be told the reason they got the gong!). Hosted by former Abbey Lounge doorman, local comedian and all around great guy, Tommy Somerville.  (and if you aren't familiar with Tommy, check out this footage of him captured from a recent Springsteen concert.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkxlQ_9K_tE   This Internet sensation has received thousands of hits and caused a momentary name change to:  Rosalita Man).
What makes the night a great success is simple.  Rather than having to endure the massacre of your favorite song, if the performance is pale, the gong shall speak and the performance is over!  (With the exception of those "so bad it's amazing" moments!)

Ok, folks, roll the dice. There is, at least, no cover. Starts around 9.
