Modern Times: Bob Dylan on the road in '60. Who'da thunk it? Print E-mail

Nov.  12

True story: I took my friend, folksinger Bill Morrissey, to see Bob Dylan some years ago at what is now the Tweeter Center. Believe it or not it was Bill's first Dylan show. Probably, it was my 6th or 7th, including the wondrous Rolling Thunder tour (with Joan Baez, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, etc.) back in the mid-'70s. Anyway, you all know how Bob likes reworking material, right? There came a point, early on, where the melody was foreign and the words were mumbled and, at the end, Bill and I looked at each other for the answer. It was not blowin' in the wind. We had no idea which familiar song we'd just heard. A survey of those around us had it, mostly, as "Masters of War." Could've been.  Now, Dylan these days, at 65, is one of rock's proud road warriors. He doesn't  have to be touring. But he does and he and his band stop at the Agannis Arena Nov. 12 for what we guess will, once again, be Bar Band Bob - which is to say the sound will echo the comfortable, shufflin' R&B groove of his latest album, "Modern Times," and the anthems will be reworked to be only marginally anthemic. He probably won't play much guitar and he probably won't speak to the crowd. And you will be delighted to be there just ... because it's Bob! Grizzled, gritty, growlin' Bob. At some level, you'll be let down and uplifted, but you won't really regret it. Show opens at 7:30 with the Racounteurs. It ain't cheap, but then again, think of what the Who and Stones cost in concert nowadays. Tickets: $79.50-$49.50.
