Fri. April 23 The Naked Girls Reading craze careens on, hitting the Coolidge Corner Theatre Friday April 23. What you get is right up there in the title of the p roduction. What are these girls reading? Well, they vary the themes and this one in Brookline is "Alice in Naked-land," where the Naked Girls go “Down the Rabbit Hole.” This is third such, em, "literary salon" put on by Mr. Scratch and his Boston Babydolls burlesque cohorts. With Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" out there in the zeitgeist, why not hold an event where the works of Lewis Carroll - and works that he inspired -read aloud by naked girls. (We've all probably heard the whispers of Carroll's purported fondness for little girls, but rest assured these girls are really women, that is to say, of age. “If we sell out, I think this will be the largest performance by Naked Girls Reading…ever. In any city.” says Scratch. The goals: Filling 217-seat upstairs hall. Some of the naked readers this go round include ... Ivy Bowers: A staple of the New York burlesque scene for many years, Ivy has recently come to Boston by way of Albany, NY. She performed with both The Blue Moon Cabaret in New York City and The Bing Bamboo Room in Albany, and has been seen on H.B.O.'s "Real Sex." Taylor Quinn: Writer, filmmaker, photographer. Taylor does it all and then blogs about it in The Horizontal Journeys of Taylor Quinn. Cameryn Moore: Writer, comedian, sex educator, performer, and, oh yeah, a phone sex operator. Her one-woman play, "Phone Whore," opens in the Boston area May 15-16. She is the host of f*ckbucket, a monthly talk show and sex-trivia night at the Savant Project, and makes semi-regular appearances at the Naked Comedy Showcase, the Comedy Studio, and Good Vibrations in Brookline - in the same building as the Coolidge. History or Herstory: “Naked Girls Reading” originated in Chicago and is the brainchild of Michelle L’Amour, burlesque superstar, author, and finalist on America’s got Talent. Michelle, who was in Boston last week for the annual Great Burlesque Exposition, said that Naked Girls Reading started out as a joke. The idea took off and she went on to buy nakedgirlsreading.com, open a studio, and began hosting monthly live events that are exactly what they advertise: approximately five naked women onstage, reading select works of literature in 15-minute spurts. L’Amour’s small Chicago studio sessions brought attention to other cities including Seattle, Denver, New York, and ultimately Boston. Boston-based burlesque producer and architect of the Great Burlesque Expo, Scratch, was intrigued by the Idea. He got in touch with Michelle L’Amour and started Naked Girls Reading Boston. Starts at midnight. Tix: $15. 290 Harvard St. Brookline 617-734-2500 www.coolidge.org/midnites |
