Wed. Nov. 8 Tim Rutili, formerly of Red Red Meat, started Califone in 1998 as a solo project and, as will often happen, it became a full-fledged band, fleshed out with some of the Meat men. Rutili initially conceived Califone - named after a brand of record player used in schools in previous decades - and meant it to be his "easy listening" alternative to Red Red Meat - "making little pop songs out of found pieces." It grew into a blues-rock, folk-rock, electronic unit with each of the four members playing multiple instruments. It's roots rock with synthesizers, it's free jazz, it's smart and emotional music. And it's absolutely suited for the Museum of Fine Arts Remis Auditorium, which is where it is Wed. Nov. 8. Now, get this: Ramblin' Jack Elliott, who we first saw on Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder tour way back in the 70s, shares the bill. We thought Ramblin' Jack was a geezer then. Now? Well, let's say if you're into the authentic and the eclectic, you'll be here. Starts at 7:30. Tickets: $26.50.
