Sat. Feb. 13 If it's Mardi Gras in the Boston area, you know it's time for Wolf's 17th Annual Mardi Gras Ball. Shaun Wortis Wolf has his big bash - a Benefit for the New Orleans Musicians Clinic - taking place Saturday Feb 13. at T.T. the Bear's. Wolf will be helming a ten-piece band - the Vudu Krewe All-Star Mardi Gras Band - with special guest vocalists Holly Brewer (HUMANWINE), Dennis Brennan, Linda Viens (Angeline), Hope Roth, Joey Pesce (ex-'til Tuesday), and Emily Grogan, showcase an evening of New Orleans rhythm and blues. Oh, and burlesque by Boston Babydolls. We asked Wolf what this meant to him, as the gig approached. He e-mailed us: "Although it's hard to believe the the longevity of this event, I still face the task of organizing all these musicians and music with real joy. I'm quite devoted to the cause: the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, and I absolutely love getting enveloped in the music each year. Ultimately the discovery of what seems to be an endless source of great songs, and then seeing how we can all make this work each and every year is just great fun. For instance, I just discovered the Joe Dyson song "Looped" which had somehow eluded me up to this point. (Recording in 1957 I think for Ace Records: "I'm looped - high as a Georgia pine!") The song is a gem and—as a wonderful testimonial to getting hammered—it's perfect for Mardi Gras. So now to decide who should sing it. Dennis Brennan would be great. Now, it'about arranging it for and watching him fall in love with it. Other tasks are of course less fun: Wandering around in January and February to put up posters; trying to get sixteen musicians and three burlesque dancers at the same place and at the same time for a rehearsal and then the gig (musicians are simply a pain in the ass, let's face it!); and lastly seeing if I still fit in my gold suit (each year more of a challenge in that department I'm afraid). 'Looped,' indeed." The cover is $12. All proceeds go to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, which provides medical care to musicians. Starts at 9. 10 Brookline St., Cambridge, 617-492-0082 www.ttthebears.com |
