Sun. Nov. 18

What, "The Departed" is back? But it's out on DVD now ... and yet you can also see it on the big screen, and we'd recommend it. It's up at the Brattle Theatre Sunday Nov. 18, two showings, at 3:30 and 9:15. It's part of the Brattle's series of films shot in our fair city. ... As to the film, you hardly need JSink's recommendation given Oscar's big kiss (finally!) to Martin Scorsese. Truth be told, we'd see anything the guy makes.  We even loved "Gangs of New York," which exposed us to a whole side of Irish-American history the books seemed to leave out. (That's why we read and talk to Howard Zinn, too.) About a year ago, we were tipped as to how good and gritty "The Departed" going to be by Mark Wahlberg's right-hand man, Eric, at CBGB during their closing stretch.  (Eric was the model for "E" in the Wahlberg-produced "Entourage.") Wahlberg plays a foul-mouthed cop, alongside Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio. Among the things we liked: There's no cutesy-pie badinage among the bad guys, no nod-and-a-wink stuff. This story, adapted from the Japanese film "Internal Affairs," to fit Boston's Irish mob turf (Hello, Whitey!) is tension-packed and explodes with the f-bomb constantaly. And, really, you're not quite sure which of the cops is a criminal and which of the criminals might be cops - didn't Mick Jagger sing something about that in "Sympathy for the Devil"? - and the multiple "endings" truly took us by surprise. Suffice to say that Jack Nicholson's brilliant mob boss live a happy carefree life in the latter part. And there's a lot of noise in the air and blood on the pavement. Great soundtrack, too, from Stones songs ("Let It Loose," "Gimme Shelter"), Dropkick Murphys and more. \ Tickets: $9.50
