Mon. Nov. 16 This tip comes with a heavy warning of caveat emptor. It also has a whiff of, "My God, the Plasmatics are gone, but this band is still around. Maybe, we should see what's going on in this weird world once again ... " The name of the band is Genitorturers and the name should give you a clue as to what it's all about. The Genitorturers - who play the Middle East Downstairs Monday Nov. 16 - were conceived by singer Gen (no last name needed) while she was in Orlando, Florida studying pre-med. It was the early '90s, a time of extreme rock and metal and Gen, an exhibitionist at her core, put together this band where sex and violence ruled the roost. I saw 'em once and recall an R/X-rated spectacle where nudity was very much part of the package. They've been featured in Hustler, which devoted a 12-page spread to Gen and her band, which should give you a pretty good idea of the explicitness. They've also been featured in Gene Simmons' "Tongue" magazine and we all know what a bastion of good taste the KISS bassist/entrepreneur is. And, natch, Fox News and HBO's "Real Sex." Gen has also been the subject of a British release feature film “Preaching to the Perverted” a fictional account exploring her life and exploits. Some history: In 1993 the band caught the ear of Miles Copeland owner of IRS Records, where the Go-Go's and R.E.M. first recorded. Copeland was, um, intrigued by what he'd heard about them and sent his assistant Nick Turner ( former drummer for Lords of the New Church) to Florida to check out the band. Upon witnessing the sexual instincts and a music style which crossed over from hardcore punk into metal with industrial electronic elements. Copeland offered the band was offered a record contract and they set out to record "120 Days of Genitorture." And, so, they have persevered, developing a fan base which calls themselves Genheads. Genitorturers' last release was "Flesh is the Law “ is sure to satisfy any aural fixation and included the track "Lecher Bitch" which was released worldwide on the videogame & soundtrack release "Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines." Earlier releases have included the CD " Machine Love” which includes a remake of the Divinyls hit “I Touch Myself” produced by Dave Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, NIN) and Rob Zombie producer Scott Humphrey. What's out Nov. 3 is "Blackheart Revolution," which is the prompt for this tour. More printable song titles include "Kabangin' All Night," "Devil in a Bottle," and "Vampire Lover."
The band's line up will include longtime drummer Angel (Dope) as well as the addition of guitarists Eric Griffin formerly of Wednesday 13/Murderdolls & Nate Manor formerly of Wednesday 13/Amen as well as a bevy of, as they say on their website, titillating performers.
Genitortuers will be supported by the Sex Slaves and Boston's Voodoo Screw Machine, both bands drenched in theatrical nastiness. The latter, for instance, is a metal band that likes dead baby dolls, naughty nurses and syringes much like Alice Cooper does. The former band has an anthem called "Thank God for Jack Daniels" that reminds us of Flipper's unreleased classic, "If I Can't Be Drunk I Don't Want to Be Alive." Bad taste? It never goes out of style. Check out the bands websites before you drop $13 (advance) or $15 (day of) to see this spectacle. Show starts at 9.
