Sales Tax Hike Coming: Spas Take 1/4 Off Products Now Print E-mail
Jul 30, 2009 at 12:00 AM

ongoing - Fri. July 31

Like you, we're just tickled pink by the new 6.25 % Mass. sales tax, which goes into effect the first of next month. And we don't even own a store near the New Hampshire border. We just buy stuff every now and then and, in this massive recession, "then" is more operable than "now." "Now" comes into play when I think, "Now, do I really need/want this?" But if I'm going to buy something, the idea of a 1.25 % more for whatever it is, just plain rubs me wrong. Do I support a toll hike? Other forms of taxeEmerges? I dunno. I just know that asking Mass. consumers to pony up even more when everyone's trying to save just doesn't make a lot of sense. You can bet anyone contemplating a big purchase - however you define it - will be making it this month. Just a guess, but August will be the slowest sales months of high-ticket items ever. And even non-high-ticket items won't be flying off shelves. Maybe the whole damn state will just drive to New Hamsphire and thumb our nose at Deval Patrick in doing so. Having got that off my chest, I'd like to note that if you ladies are thinking about salon/spa times of items related to manicures, pedicures, body scrubs and the like Emerge and G20, both owned by Joyce Hampers and located two blocks apart on Newbury Street are taking 1/4 off its stuff through July 31. While you're there, you can indulge in the same-priced stuff like Swedish and deep tissue massage, reflexology and mud treatments.
