21st Century Repo Man Print E-mail
Jul 18, 2009 at 12:00 AM

Sat. July 18

Yeh, there's DVD and Blu-Ray and home entertainment centers, but the midnight movie lives and one tearing up the country - market by market - right now is "REPO! The Genetic Opera." It follows, sort of, in the proud tradition of that midnight movie from the '80s, "Repo Man." This 21st century Repo comes to the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline Saturday July 18 at midnight. Here's the plot: In the no-so-distant future, a worldwide epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges. This would be Geneco, a biotech company that offers organ transplants ... for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession and hunted by The Repo Man. It's a bit "Rocky Horror" and a bit "Bladerunner" and it's got that kind of audience participation thing going on.
You wRepo: The Genetic Operaant a cast with punk cred? This rock opera has got it. It boasts an original soundtrack, equal parts goth and punk rock and features vocal performances by an amazing cast which includes, yes, Paris Hilton. We've met her - covered her for the Boston Phoenix at a star turn she did at the Estate last year - and we still haven't figured out if she's in on the joke. Sometimes it seems she is, and then she steps into that one-woman world of Parisland.
Who else is aboard? Bill Moseley, Sarah Brightman, Anthony Stewart Head, Alexa Vega, Paul Sorvino, and Skinny Puppy singer Ohgr. Instrumentals and score provided by an all-star lineup that features performances from Joan Jett (who cameos in the film), Richard Patrick (Filter), Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Clown (Slipknot), Ray Luzier (Army of Anyone), Brian Young (David Lee Roth's band), Sonny Moore (From First to Last), Richard Fortus (Guns & Roses), David J (Bauhaus/Love & Rockets), Daniel Ash (Love & Rockets), Blasko (Ozzy Osbourne), Tommy Clefetus (Rob Zombie's band), Melora Creager (Rasputina). Also lending her voice to the soundtrack Poe.
For behind the scenes footage and more visit the film's main page www.repo-opera.com.  Tickets: $9.
