Three Decades ago there was this band, Cheap Trick and this city, Budokan ... Print E-mail
Dec 26, 2008 at 12:00 AM

Fri. Dec. 26

The day after Christmas and the holiday's put you in a nostalgic mood, but, also given you a little itch to ... rock. Family's nice, but enough's enough. So, you want out of the house, you want something that reminds you of a glorious past, you want loud music, that pops, that rocks ... you go to the Regent Theatre in Arlington for the local theatrical premiere of Cheap Trick's seminal/landmark show "Live at Budokan 1978." Those of you who were there in the day remember Cheap Trick had put out two darn good studio LPs, but this "Budokan" live album, originally import only, just ratcheted up all the Tricks and brought that ineffable live quality to vinyl. Now that vinyl is sRick Nielsen of Cheap Tricktill there - the 10 song album was pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl and released Dec. 9 - and there's a 3-CD/1 DVD box set, with 15 songs on the DVD and an hour's worth of material. (It's all about multiple versions and bells and whistles these days. The record industry motto, as it spirals down the drain, is repackage, repackage, repackage. Collectors buy everything!) As you might suspect, there's a lotta bonus stuff here: reflections, extra videos, something from the 2008 "Return to Budokan" concert. Why go to Arlington when you can purchase it for home theater? "It's more of a concert experience," says Leland Stein, Regent programmer. "There aren't a lot of big screens and we have a concet PA so it will plya at something resembling the original volume. And when there's an audience of like-minded fans, that communal concert experience happens." Tickets: $8 advance, $10 day of. Group prices available through the theatre. 8 p.m. Remember: Parents this is kid friendly. Remember kids: It's parent friendly too. (Keep in mind how the song "Surrender" goes - kids and parents eye each other warily only to bond over KISS. More or less.) By the way, this beings a monthly Regent rock concert film series.
