Right On! Rock, Garage and Soul at the Lizard Lounge Print E-mail
Saturday, 15 November 2008

Sat. Nov. 15

Ed Valauskus, producer at Q Division Studio and bassist for many a band, has got what he he calls a "funk, soul and down 'n' dirty rock 'n' roll" show set for the Lizard Lounge, Satruday Nov. 15. There's more than a few Q connections here. The headliner, The Right Ons, hail from Madrid, and have beens spending a lot of time in Somerville at the Q studios making a new disc with Matt Beaudoin and Valauskas, who saDownbeat 5ys the best description of the Right Ons is “the music the wife of James Brown would have played their children.” (No jokes about pill-popping or wife abuse, please.) They headline the show at midnight. Before them, Boston rock-garage-soul quartet, the Downbeat 5. (Yes, we're aware there are four of them and they're called the 5. That's rock 'n' roll for you, full on non-sequitors.) The 5 - in photo - are led by former DMZ co-founder, guitarist JJ Rassler, who's just played some DMZ reunion shows. Their most recent live record was also recorded with Beaudoin and Valauskas.

John Powhida, third on the bill with his band the John Powhida International Airport, is best-known fro his work with the Rudds, now an indefinite hiatus. Powhida explained to us the Airport name came to him, because unlike Kennedy, LaGuardia, Reagan and others, he was unlikely to get an aiport named for himself - unless he did it himself so he's called his band an airport. (Again, rock 'n' roll and non-sequitors.) Powhida recorded a four-song EP, "Dirty Birdy and The Funny Buddy," with Paul Kolderie and Adam Taylor at Camp Street Studios.. Joining Powhinda in his International Airport ferocious up and coming band The Globs, who just released "the sound and the fury." Opening up: Go Dog Go, led by Darren Ray of the Blue Man Group Orchestra. They combine combine riffs and catchy choruses reminiscent of your favorite '70's rock outfit but with a solid boot in the present. These guys promise upbeat, foot stomping, groove orientated rock-n-roll. Will it shock you to find out they have recently finished an EP with Valauskas at Q Division? We think not. They hope to release in early next year. Starts at 9.
