David Byrne: The Songs of Byrne and Brian Eno, Live at Citi/Wang Print E-mail
Thursday, 30 October 2008

Fri. Oct. 31

David Byrne has taken a lot of strange, and sometimes wonderful twists in his long career, post with Talking Heads and in his post-Heads excurisons. One wing of his career involved Brian Eno, well-known now as U2's producer (among other things) but then known as the former Roxy Music keyboardist/sound treatment specialist, eccentric solo artist (in rock or ambient mode) and producer of early new wave groups like Ultravox and Devo. With the Heads, Eno made three records, and then one seminal album with Byrne, "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts." Now, they've made another - available only from the website www.everythingthathappens.com. Writes Byrne on the website: "Brian Eno David Byrneand I recently finished our first collaboration in about 30 years. The name of the new record is 'Everything That Happens Will Happen Today.' For the most part, Brian did the music and I wrote some tunes, words and sang. It's familiar but completely new as well. We're pretty excited. The album is available exclusively from this Web site. You can stream all of the songs for free and purchase it in a variety of digital and physical formats, including a limited edition Deluxe Package designed by Sagmeister Inc. All formats can be downloaded immediately and physical CDs will be shipped in the Fall. One song, 'Strange Overtones,' is available free for download." So, go to the site. We're having fun hearing the eerie, comfort sound - beautiful noise for the post-punk art-rock generation. (Both Byrne and Eno have done their trafficking in dissonance; not so much here. This is quite mellifluous.)

Byrne brings this and other collaborations with Eno to the stage at the Citi Performing Arts Center/Wang Theatre Friday Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. It's called “Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno.” No, Eno won't be performing. Eno has performed in public very rarely - though you owe it to yourself to get the early Roxy videos on DVD just to see how eccentric, flamboyant and cool he was. He's still cool - but he likes working behind the scenes or writing. He gave the greatest lecture about high and low culture I've ever heard, at the MFA some years ago, basically, saying there is no high and low culture, it's all of one body. I was a convert to start, but this helped reinforce my view. At any rate, this show features Byrne and the band he's assembled. He'll be drawing the music from all their collaborative efforts. It should be lush, layered, hypnotic, transfixing, transporting. Tickets: $65-$35.
