More Sax: Ken Field And Pals Bring the Funk (and Jazz) to Johnny D's Print E-mail
Wednesday, 15 October 2008

Wed. Oct. 15

Ken Field is one of favorite sax players around town, and, one thing about him: He really likes playing with other sax players. Also, he favors a wide-open avant-garde-but-funky approach to music, and has both a sharp worldview and witty approach to self-promotion. For instance, ask him some details about what he and some pals are doing Wednesday Oct. 15 at Johnny D's and he replies: "Wild and crazy free co-ed sax coming to Davis Square" Details, please. "Multi-instrumentalist and cult music goddess Amy Denio will be in town from Seattle for HONK! Fest, and makes a rare Boston area cKen Fieldoncert appearance in a collaborative performance with Brooklyn-based funk/groove saxophonist and Living Daylights leader Jessica Lurie, and Boston's own mardi gras madmaker Ken Field, leader of the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble and long-time member of the avant-rock group Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. The trio of saxophonists will be joined by local stalwart drummer Phil Neighbors, and will mix and match between a variety of musical instruments including clarinet, accordion, voice, percussion, and electronics."
Sounds like it will be a pretty eclectic night. How would Field describe the affair? "In addition to moments of beauty and serenity, all heck is bound to break loose.  Also appearing will be an audio feed from the presidential debate that night, for those nuts who don't yet know who they are voting for."

Field, Dennio and Lurie last performed together under Field's leadership at Seattle's famed BumbershootFestival a decade ago. Some background on the players: Denio (rhymes with "Ohio" or "gennaio") is a multi-instrumentalist composer and singer based
in Seattle. She has been creating & producing soundscores for dance, theater and film since1983. She has received grants and fellowshipsfrom NEA, Meet The Composer, Civitella Ranieri, Seattle Arts Commission and many more, as well astouring solo and with ensembles include, but arein no way limited to, Fred Frith and Bill Frisell. (Those are mighty fine collabators.) Lurie's vocal prowess and skills on the saxophone and flute have garnered rave reviewsinternationally. A renowned composer, performance artist, and woodwind-er now living in Brooklyn,Lurie leads the groove/jazz ensemble LivingDaylights, with whom she's toured widely.  Her music has incorporated elements of Sicilian dialect, deep grooves, and sound that reflectsthe heat of the American south.
Field is a composer, saxophonist, flautist, andpercussionist. His solo work, and his work withBridgman/Packer Dance and groups such as Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, Willie Loco Alexander's Persistence of Memory Orchestra, and his experimental brass band the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble have received international public and critical acclaim. Field has composed a number of pieces for the children's televisionprogram Sesame Street.
The Johnny D's show starts at 9 and tickets are $10.
