 Oct. 11

We admit it: We like all-instrumental rock bands. From the Ventures to the Raybeats to, well, today's entry Russian Circles, which plays the Middle East Downstairs Oct. 11. First off, you're not bothered by a showboating singer or pretentious lyrics. Secondly, bands like Russian Circles seriously get into massive, yet floating, grooves and the sound mutates and throbs and  pulses. Their latest disc, "Enter," has but six tracks and they all mesh together as one. Guitarist Mike Sullivan (no relation) says, "We wanted to make sure it was one giant piece, not disjointed song by song." Sullivan told Guitar Player he envisioned his Chicago-based trio as "an all-instrumental jam between Pink Floyd and Fugazi." How can you not be enticed by that? And they're the opening band on this bill headlined by experimental Seattle rockers Minus the Bear. P.O.S. and The Velvet Teen are in the middle. Should be a cerebral, yet visceral night in clubland. Tickets: $13. Starts at 9 p.m.
