Judy Garland Comes Alive! Sort of ... with the Pops Print E-mail
Sunday, 29 June 2008

Sun. June 29

It's called "Judy Garland - A Life on Stage" and it's at Symphony Hall Sunday June 29, with the Boston Pops. Isn’t Judy GJudy Garlandarland, like, long-deceased? “She’s coming out of the grave,” says Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart. Actually, “the Judy Garland Show we’re doing this year (is done through) the miracle of digital technology, which has now come up with the ability to take footage of a legendary performer and remove the accompaniment and then sync a live orchestra to it. So, you have the experience of what it might have been like to have Judy Garland performing at the Pops. I think it will be interesting to see how it plays and see if people feel a connection as they would with a blood, sweat and tears sort of performer. I’ve never done anything like this, except where Natalie Cole sings with her dad, but then at least one of the performers is living. Natalie almost always does the ‘Unforgettable’ duet with her father and it’s the moment that brings down the house.” (We were there at the season kickoff, and indeed, it did.) What you just read was Lockhart's take on it when we talked before the Pops season began. But he's stepping aside as conductor for this World Premiere. Doug Katsaros is taking the baton.  Sunday's show is at 7:30. Tickets: $87-$19.
